Have you experienced hair loss due to hair extensions? Maybe thinning edges? Not you yet, what about really bad bumps and stress to your scalp from tight braids? Hmmm… one more, what about extreme shedding and breakage to your natural hair?
There are a lot of mixed reviews concerning if hair extensions causes hair loss or if they help promote healthy hair. Regardless on which side you fall on, I am going to give you some really vital tips on how to prevent hair loss and help you achieve hair growth.
1. Quality, Quality, Quality!!
Sometimes we think cheap hair, that looks good, is the best way to go.
Just like you choose high quality products regarding skin care and makeup, you also need to choose the best top quality when selecting your hair extensions. A lot of cheap or low quality hair are made with inferior materials that are harmful to your hair. So always choose quality over everything.
2. Find a Professional Hair Stylist
Did you know poor installation is one of the main reasons for hair loss and hair damage? If you are new to hair extensions, it is important to go to a professional hairstylist. When choosing a stylist make sure you do your research on them and their work. If you choose to do your own hair, I suggest educating yourself on the proper ways of installing your hair extensions.
3. Sew-In vs. Quick Weave/Glue
Sew-Ins are better for your hair than quick weaves or glue ins. Although quick weaves or glue ins are easier to do, you are applying glue to your scalp. If done on a weave cap, the glue is exposed to your natural hair, which can turn into a big problem. Also some of the chemicals in hair glue has caused a lot of hair damage for women.
Sew-ins will provide better hair growth. But there are some things you need to watch out for with sew-ins. First, make sure your braids are not too tight. And second, make sure your edges are being taken care of. Tight braids cause a lot of tension on the scalp, damage to your hair follicles, and damage to your scalp. So whomever installs your extensions, make sure they properly braid your hair.
4. Maintaining Your Hair After Installation
Remember, just because you have hair extensions in does not mean you neglect your hair underneath. That is a big no no! This will cause so many problems. Some tools and tips I suggest on maintaining your hair are:
This tool is a great way to keep the blood circulating, which promotes hair growth. Your hair holds a lot of nutrients that are needed for properly growing your hair. By stimulating the blood flow, you are sure to grow your hair. You should at least do this 3 times a week for 5 minutes.
You will need applicator bottles when you are washing your hair. You will add your different products in those bottles and then apply to your hair (you’ll find out the best products soon). It makes it much easier to apply directly to your scalp without you using too much product and making a big mess!
Some products that are great when cleaning your scalp and hair are Tea Tree Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water, Coconut Oil, and high quality shampoo. There are so many more products that are great, but these products successfully worked for me. The benefit of using apple cider vinegar is that it removes dirt and build up from your hair.
When using tea tree oil, I would suggest mixing it with the coconut oil as a hot oil treatment. This helps refine your hair follicles and strengthen your roots. When choosing your shampoo make sure, if possible, it is top quality and sulfate free. All of these products can be applied using your applicator bottles.
My friend…this comb is a dream come true! This will help with itchy scalp. Yes girl, straight to scratch heaven! When washing your hair, I would suggest that you use this comb. The comb is designed to fit underneath your braids to remove any dandruff or build up that causes irritation or itchy scalp, while massaging the scalp and increasing blood flow.
5. Drying Your Hair
Make sure you properly dry your hair. Although you do not want to dry your hair extensions with a blow dryer, you still want to dry your natural hair. The reason you want to do this is because you do not want to cause mildew, bad smells, or breakage to your hair.
The easiest way to do this is by using a blow dryer on low/medium heat, lift one extension at a time, and apply the heat directly to your hair and roots. In doing this, you are not drying your hair extensions only your hair underneath. Once you have finished that process, allow your hair extensions to air dry.
5. Know When To Let GO!
So many women wear hair weaves or extensions too long. It is very important to know when to take out your hair extensions. I recommend only wearing them for three months at a time. The reason for this is that wearing your extensions too long will cause your natural hair to tangle, matte, shed, and break off extremely bad. After three months, I suggest you remove your installation and allow your hair to breathe. And once you hair has then it is time to slay all over again!
Although there are many ways to improve hair growth while wearing hair extensions, these steps will have you on your way to healthy hair and improve your hair growth. This will also decrease your chances of hair loss and hair damage. Enjoy your hair growth process!
